Group Project

Tool : Rhino, Illustrator, Laser Cutter

Timeline : 5 weeks (November 2018 - December 2018)

Project Overview

SHIM_2 is a space design project that provides a relaxing environment for students and faculty members to enjoy. Situated outside the Information Science Museum of the university, which is surrounded by ordinary and monotonous buildings, the project offers a refreshing space where students can unwind and take a break.

Location

The Information Science Museum of Soongsil University is situated at a considerable distance from the main campus, with a road separating the two areas. As a result, the museum feels detached from the campus environment. Furthermore, the building's exterior is characterized by a dark and rigid design, which, along with the presence of a nearby ashtray, creates an unwelcoming atmosphere for non-smokers. Consequently, students who frequent the Information Science Museum lack accessible spaces to relax and socialize outside the building.

Purpose

The aim of the project was to create a space outside the Information Science Museum where students and faculty members could take a break from the stresses of university life and engage in social interactions. The design was based on a grasshopper concept and the prototype was developed using 3D modeling and laser cutting. The structure was constructed using wooden boards with a 200:1 ratio.

After laser cutting, 200 units were produced and labeled for this project. The design incorporates curves to add an element of elegance to the sculpture. This allows for a soft and gentle feeling to be perceived from multiple angles of the artwork.
